For adults between the ages of 35 and 55, life can be filled with the trials and tribulations of working, while raising children. Often though, this caring and bringing up a family includes having to care for an elderly parent or relative at the same time. These middle-aged adults are known as the ‘sandwich generation’. This is becoming more and more common in modern life due to many factors, such as, the cost of living and social interaction (or the lack of it).
These situations place a huge strain on the sandwich generation; financially, emotionally, physically and psychologically. Providing care to both young children and parents or older relatives can be hugely stressful and working a full-time job at the same time, is extremely challenging.
The stress and strain that the sandwich generation encounters, comes in all forms. Life these days is not cheap and providing enough financial support for 3 generations can cause huge strain on mental and physical health.
Here are a few ways to lower the stress levels:
- Communication is perhaps one of the most important factors in a complex family situation. Needs, expectations and consideration should all be openly discussed when the need arises, thus addressing and resolving any problems before they become more serious than necessary.
- Keep expenses down by perhaps inviting your elderly parent or relative to stay in the family home instead of where they live, if it incurs extra costs.
- Set boundaries when it comes to finances. Let everyone know the budget and make it clear it cannot be exceeded (within reason).
- Dedicate 30 minutes of the day to do something that feeds the soul and brings you joy.
- Make sure you get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause all sorts of health problems, mentally and physically.
- Keep your eyes and ears open for support in terms of elderly group activities, such as garden clubs, walking clubs or book clubs. This will ease the stress of the sandwich generation member as well as the elderly parent or relative.
- If the strain becomes overwhelming, seek help! Professional help or just talking to someone and sharing your feelings can do the world of good for your mental health.
